Hello You. Been a bit quiet on the wonky tape-loops front of late (keeping my head down, working on new material, avoiding the limelight etc.), but absolutely tickled pink to announce the release of a pair of Howlround live recordings from the archives for Bandcamp Friday – on a super limited CD! Glass-mastered (none of your CDr shenanigans), with beautiful scuzzy artwork sourced from a series of mysterious mould-encrusted photos taken by an unknown photographer, which perfectly captures the sense of magnificent desolation you’ve come to expect over the years. Beautifully mastered by RedRedPaw and ‘sounding like the pits of hell in places’ according to DJ Food. There are some ambient parts too, of course… Sort of…

Although these two live recordings are separated by some three years, it’s the attributes they share that inspired me to place them together here. For a start they were both recorded in very, VERY cold spaces – one a burned out former stately home with magnificent natural acoustics, the other a dilapidated railway arch somewhere beneath Loughborough Junction, in the dying days shortly before a big nasty corporation changed the locks and put up a big metal shutter. Both were composed entirely in situ and in one long take, using field recordings, voices and feedback, captured on site with Revox B77 and UHER 4000 tape machines, one slightly broken microphone and absolutely nothing else. And perhaps most pertinently, both had been considered lost forever until recently, when I chanced upon on an old flashcard. Phew!
